This is the third and final in “A Series of Reappropriated Poetry: Derived mainly from Bilboard 100 and American Top 40,” a series of guest posts/poems by Shreena T, Brown ’16.
what it means to be a girl
You make me wanna act like a girl
Paint my nails and wear high heels
I’ve got my makeup on
They play my favourite song
I feel like a princess girl
Pedicure on my toes
Trying on all my clothes
Boys blowing up my phones
Looking like a model
Shaped like a bottle
Magazine figure
Beauty queen on a silver screen
Living life like I’m in a dream
I wear my flip flops
And when I let my hair down
That’s when the party starts
Daisy Duke, Bikini on top
Sun-kissed skin, so hot it’ll melt your popsicle
Tank tops and cut-off jeans
Bikinis and belly rings
You spend all your money on a big ol’ fancy car
For us bright-eyed honeys
Lay your money down, we’ll let you buy a round
Young wild girls
No matter what we do
You’ll always come back.
About the author:
Shreena has eaten honeybees, treats wine as a food group, lives for late-night conversations with strangers and travels the world on her own with a backpack (quite like Dora, minus the monkey). She spends her time people-watching and creating elaborate backstories. You may bump into her 5-foot frame curled up in an armchair somewhere with a mug of steaming Chamomile and a work of satire/postmodern/feminist fiction.
The post a series of reappropriated poetry: what it means to be a girl appeared first on that girl magazine.
